After approval of President, CAB become law in which Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, Sikh, Christian, Parsi immigrants coming from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan will get citizenship easily in India.

Firstly, Amit Shah, Union Home Minister of India introduced Citizens Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha and then in Rajya Sabha. After long hours of debate, Citizen Amendment Bill was passed in the house, Modi Govt had a majority in Lok Sabha (311 Voted in favor and 80 against it) but apart from not having a majority in Rajya Sabha (125 voted in favor and 99 against it), Modi Government has won. What Is Citizenship Amendment Law?

Central Govt brought Citizenship Amendment Bill, to change Citizenship Act, 1955. These changes become law as early as possible. So, now illegal refugees who are non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan will get citizenship in India. Till now, refugees considered illegal refugees. The proposed law also relaxes ‘citizenship by naturalization’. One of the main requirements for ‘citizenship by naturalization’ under the present citizenship act is people must have resided in India in the last 12 months and for 11 of the preceding 14 years. Proposes law decreases these 11 years to 6 years for people belong to Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, Sikh, Christian, Parsi and 3 Countries i.e. Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.

Which Immigrants Will Get Benefit?

There are millions of people will get benefit from the law said by “Union home Minister Amit Shah” in Parliament. As per new law, it will be applicable to all immigrants irrespective of date i.e. from the date people arrive in India, will consider a citizen of India. Refugees who are Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, Sikh, Christian, Parsi who came on or before 31-12-2014 will only get citizenship of India.

Where Citizen Amendment Bill Is Not Apply?

In the northeast, the Citizenship Amendment Law of the Modi Government is totally opposed. In many states which include Assam, Meghalaya, people take to streets and continuously demand to withdraw the Citizen Amendment Bill. Though, while implementing the law, Govt has also announced that Citizenship Amendment Law will not apply in some areas like Arunachal, Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur.

Because of the local people demand, Central Govt has released an Inner Line Permit here and due to this, this law will not apply here. Northeast states say that, if immigrants will get citizenship here their identity and culture will affect. The government of India issued an Inner line Permit, a travel document to its citizens so that they can travel for a specified period in the protected area.

Why is there Opposition to Law?

This law is opposed, from the road to parliament, People attack the government. Many parties opposed this law, including congress, said that this law violence of constitution and against the ideas of India. In parliament, this bill has opposed by congress and counted this bill violates article 14 which gives equal citizenship. Including congress, many lawyers called citizenship amendment law, a violation of the law.

As per legal details, bill break article 14, article 5 and article 21. Many pleas against CAB have applied in the Supreme Court. The opposition also claims that the government prepares for NRC by bringing CAB first, which is against the minorities. Apart from the legal point of view, CAB is also opposed in the Northeast because it affects their identity.

Why People Oppose Citizenship Amendment Bill, Here are some points:

  • This Bill has seen as an attempt to legalize citizenship of illegal Hindu refugees leaving behind Muslims.
  • Assam people having a fear that if Bangla-speaking illegal refugees get citizenship, these refugees can outnumber locals, threatening their cultural power.
  • The use of religion as a criterion for citizenship interrupts the basis of the Indian Constitution. CAB doesn’t mention anything regarding the population of Muslims coming from Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Those opposing it say that it intentionally excludes Muslims.

BJP will Conduct Awareness Campaigns across the Country:

Amit shah attack opposition on Citizenship Amendment Act, BJP said that propaganda spread regarding Citizenship Amendment Bill between the people will remove. All over the country, Bharatiya Janata Party will organize awareness campaigns about Citizenship Amendment Act. Across the country, BJP executive president JP Nadda decides to conduct regional level workshop. BJP conduct awareness campaign from 14 December to 18 December 2019, to tell people regarding law features and its benefits.  1st Workshop will held in Lucknow on 14 Dec, 2nd workshop held in Delhi and Mumbai on 15 Dec, on 16 dec in Bangalore and Kolkata and in Guwahati on 18 December. A list of people from each authority has called from the party office, which will be sent to the workshop.
